Health Literacy San Diego is a collaborative
effort among the Community Health Improvement Partners (CHIP) and the San
Diego Council on Literacy (SDCOL). In 2008, CHIP and SDCOL released
"When Words Get in the Way: A Collaborative Plan to Address Health
Literacy in San Diego County." This report serves as the
statement of need for our project and outlines a health literacy
plan for San Diego County. This report is available by clicking
here.
The mission of our project is:
To improve healthcare communication by addressing literacy
abilities, language barriers and cultural differences.
Phase one involves implementing three report recommendations
that take a comprehensive approach to addressing health literacy in
San Diego County by: teaching adults with low literacy skills about
health literacy (through implementing a health literacy
curriculum), increasing awareness of health literacy among
healthcare providers and staff (by training healthcare
professionals and practitioners) and ensuring that information is
available on an easy to access and navigate website.
